Nate Parker’s The Birth of a Nation set to score big with a $17.5 million deal!
THIS IS HUGE and the details are still being finalized but THIS IS HUGE. I’ve been keeping up with the back story of this film which is basically that actor, writer and now director Nate Parker decided that he wouldn’t take another acting role until he could play Nat Turner. He decided to create the role he wanted, the way he wanted. He spent years working on a script and invested $100,000 of his own money to get the project going. Although he initially couldn’t get the support or funding he needed for the film and was even told by distributors that people overseas did NOT want to see black faces on their screen (I can’t remember where I read this but when I do I’ll update with a link) he pressed on. He began scouting locations and hiring production crews. Eventually, he got a few additional investors and finally got enough money to complete the project. The film debuted at Sundance this week and received so much praise that Fox Searchlight put up $17.5 million to acquire the rights. Although nothing has been finalized, this is a huge deal! With the current climate around the film industry, this is proof that WE don’t need their award shows, acclaim or even their money. When WE have stories that we want to tell our way, WE should come together and do just that. They end up paying us for the final product anyway. HA!
