“If Will Smith can play Dr. Omalu why can’t Zoe Saldana play Nina Simone?” Best thing I’ve seen all day. I’m a filmmaker, I know the feeling of selecting the actor that you think will portray the role the best based on their performance. WHY can’t we give the film a chance? Maybe, just maybe, the director and everyone involved felt like Zoe was the best actress for the job regardless of her skin tone. Crazy concept, I know. If you think it will be trash, don’t support it. Simple. But to assume that it will be horrible based on the single fact that Zoe Saldana looks nothing like Nina Simone is ridiculous. I’m here for this film and I’m here for artistic creativity and freedom. If you think you can do better, by all means, go out and make a better movie using a darker skinned actress. 🙂
I think Zoe will do a fine job and I will be supporting the movie so that I can see for myself if she can pull it off under the enormous amount of negative energy surround this film from it’s inception. Come for me if you must 🙂
Remember back in grade school when you were assigned books to read over the summer? I can clearly remember having to turn in 3 book reports during the first week of school and it SUCKED. Now as an adult I appreciate the idea of keeping young minds active over the summer and have decided to give myself a summer reading list. I’m going to be realistic because let’s be honest, who has time for LIFE in 2015? I’m going to make the time and TRY really hard to finish the books on my list. I’m giving myself until the official end of summer which is September 23rd. In no particular order here’s my summer reading list (some are books that I’ve already started, others I have not).
Like almost every black female my age, when Sister Souljah dropped The Coldest Winter Ever back in 1999 I thought it was the best book that I’d ever read. I finished it in two days and yearned for more. Unfortunately, fans waited until 2008 for what was believed to be a sequel to The Coldest Winter Ever but turned out to be a prequel highlighting Winter’s main love interest Midnight, not her. I actually have Midnight: A Gangster Love Story sitting on my bookshelf…I can’t get into it. However, last year Souljah released the sequel, A Deeper Love…, and although it is the story of her little sister Porsche I have to say it’s pretty damn good! Not The Coldest Winter Ever good, but I really got into it on my recent trip to Phoenix and am pleasantly surprised. I’m mid way and so far Winter’s character…I won’t spoil it lol, but I will finish this book by the end of the summer.
It’s no secret that I’m a Spike fan, so there is no excuse why it’s taken me a few years to finish this book lol. It’s not that it’s not good, I guess I just have to be in the mood to read it and when I am, I read a bit and put it away. This summer, I’m finishing it.
After seeing that fabulous documentary I must read her words. The real goal for myself is to read the book before the infamous movie comes out featuring my wife in my head Zoe Saldana but I’d like to have it in my possession and read by the end of the summer.
There’s also an African American Studies text book that I’d like to finish but I might give myself until the end of the year to finish it 😉
What books are you reading this summer?
If you have Netflix you MUST check out the fascinating and enlightening new documentary “What Happened, Miss Simone?”. I checked it out this past weekend and was astounded by how much I didn’t know about the singer’s life, mainly because of my own refusal to really investigate her history until I read her autobiography, but when I saw the preview for this new doc and saw her daughter’s involvement in the project I couldn’t resist. I won’t go into the details but it’s really a great doc that I hope you get the chance to see.
And for the record, Netflix has been doing its thing with all of this new original content. I saw some previews for a few more docs and shows that they have lined up for next year and they are really making me give my cable box a side eye.
It seems like everywhere I look someone is using a Nina Simone song for their tv show, commercial or trailer. A few years ago before the world realized that Nina Simone’s music should be the score to everyone’s life I did a short test video with some new equipment and one of her songs. I’ve rediscovered it and deemed it worthy of new life on my new blog since, well…it’s rained quite a bit here in NYC. Technically it is still spring AND my garden loves the fresh rain water so I’m not complaining about all of this rain…yet.
