Happy Pride! (throwback video of when I walked in the parade – 2011)

It’s the most wonderful time of the year…PRIDE!  If you don’t know, I support the LGBTQ community to the fullest and since 2011 (WOW that feels like yesterday) I have walked in the NYC Pride Parade with my cousin and her wife.  I captured some pretty epic footage the first year that we walked in the parade and decided to bring it back just in time for this year’s celebration.  This is all raw footage of the day but it does a pretty good job of showing just how much fun the Pride Parade is.  Enjoy!

Video: How To Build A Man?

Don’t forget, I am keeping myself busy over at sometimesshewrites.com.  This is the space that I’ve designated for my writing and this new written piece now has a video to go along with it.  It can be seen below or at sometimesshewrites.com.  Enjoy!

Travel: Washington D.C.’s National Museum of African American History and Culture

A couple of months ago I had the opportunity to visit the new National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington D.C. and I must say, I’ve never been so overwhelmed in the most beautiful way possible.  The sheer amount of information, history, culture and energy in the museum is astonishing.  I managed to get a few iPhone photos (apologies if they are sideways, still can’t figure that out) and video to share but they do it no justice.  If you can, stalk the museum’s website for timed passes and experience this gem in person.

#findyoursummer (August) For the youth…

Summer Finale!

I love this piece.  Black and brown youth are often forced to grow up fast due to many circumstances but this summer in particular, I felt there were a lot of children forced to witness a ton of injustice, bigotry and hate.  I also saw a lot of children being children.  Actually playing…OUTSIDE!  They were being kids.  Carefree, joyful and full of life.  What a beautiful sight!  I love that this piece came to me while I was at the beach.  I also love that the children filmed are silhouetted by the sun so that you can’t see their faces.  I’m always cautious about photographing or videotaping kids so the sun worked in my favor on that hot August day.  I wrote this piece with the youth of today in mind but also for the young at heart.  As we wrap up another summer season, I hope you were able to at least for a moment capture the essence of the season, be youthful in spirit and #findyoursunmer.  Here’s to a great end of the summer and a prosperous Fall season!

August (For the youth…)

I hope the sun’s rays were good to you and allowed you to be a kid again.

Free.

Abundant in play and without worry.

I hope the ocean’s waves crashed at your feet and washed away any doubt that you could be anything.

And everything.

And nothing,

if you so choose.

I hope the August heat melted uncertainty and birthed promise.

Find joy in the light.

Let the sweat trickle down your brow and illuminate your aura.

Taste the sweet bitterness of the ocean and become drunk off of its life.

I hope you found freedom in the ocean’s waves and will never let it go.

Dawn Richard’s 360 VR video “Not Above That”

Can’t stop,  won’t stop.  @DawnRichard just dropped a 360 VR (virtual reality) video for one of her latest singles “Not Above That”.  I saw her perform in Brooklyn this past weekend as part of the Northside Festival and it was such a good performance!  Not that I expected anything less, it’s just a refreshing treat to see someone whose music you support and love DESTROY a live performance in the best way.  She gives her all on stage and in her visuals as seen with this boundary pushing release.  Break out the 3d glasses and enjoy the ride!

#findyoursummer Untitled #1 June

Remember being a kid during the summer break from school?  It was the BEST time of the year, besides Christmas.  Anything was possible and the world was yours.  I miss that feeling, that fearlessness of being a kid and knowing, truly knowing and believing that ANYTHING was possible.  Well, I’m getting her back.  Young Shay. The girl who learned how to ride her bike with one hand one summer because her other arm was in a yellow cast from her wrist to her shoulder.  No fear of falling and breaking my other arm, no reason to believe that the kids from around the way wouldn’t pick me to be on their team for any game because I was still the fasted girl in the neighborhood, even with one free arm.  No doubt, carefree, and open to the possibilities of everything working out for the better.  THAT SHAY!  I’m challenging you to do the same.  This summer, #findyoursummer.  Reclaim that kid in you that knew there was nothing but endless possibilities waiting for you when you stepped outside that door, no matter what the circumstances.  This summer, be fearless, be vibrant, be open and live fuller!

Each month this summer I’ll be releasing a new video, written poem or spoken word piece as part of my #findyoursummer project.  The first piece “Untitled #1 (June)” can be seen below.  Enjoy!

Alicia Keys “In Common” video

AK47!  This video is so New York and classy.  I love it and I honestly didn’t like the song when I first heard it a few weeks ago.  I left it alone, revisited it and it started growing on me.  Now seeing the video, I’m sold!
